Today, tech accessory company iHome launched the iSP100 Outdoor Smart Plug — a tough, water-resistant HomeKit-enabled plug meant for outdoor use. It’s perfect for outdoor holiday decorations up to 1800 watts, and can be controlled via both Siri and the Home app. This means it can be added to scenes as well, so you can, for instance, turn on your lights, your giant inflatable snowman, and Mariah Carey’s "All I Want For Christmas Is You" simultaneously. The plug also works with Amazon’s Alexa-enabled devices, Google’s Assistant, Wink, and Nest, so if you’re not an Apple user, you’ll still have tons of options for managing your decor situation.
Some smart thermostats contain a Wi-Fi module that connects directly to your home network. Others come with a separate bridge that connects to your router via an Ethernet cable. This could be a problem if your router doesn’t have a spare socket: check before you buy, or you might end up needing to install a cumbersome network switch just to run your thermostat.
The Nest comes in a range of attractive colours, and it’s easy to use too: the whole outer casing acts as a dial, giving you highly tactile control over temperature, schedules and other features. You can alternatively configure everything from the companion smartphone app – but you shouldn’t have to do much of this, as the Nest is designed to learn your preferences and create a heating schedule automatically.
Additional features: At 14 inches wide, the compact furnace provides high-efficiency heating with 96 percent-plus AFUE ratings. The aluminized steel tubular primary heat exchanger — with distinctive tubular aluminized steel construction formed using wrinkle-bend technology — provides durability, long-term reliability, and efficiency.
You can also invite the family to have control through the app, to ensure the heating won’t switch off if your partner has a work-at-home day and you don’t. Once installed on a device the Manage Users option gives every member the same level of control as long as they have been invited originally – and there’s the option to remove users, which is useful, say, if you have guests.
Nearly half of all space heater fires involve electric space heaters. Be sure electric heaters have automatic shut-off tip-over protection, and always plug them directly into a wall outlet, rather than an extension cord. Unplug them when you leave a room or go to sleep.
