Attention, HomeKit lovers: the summer months are quickly approaching, which means the summer heat is also coming fast. If you’re in the market for a smart cooling solution to add to your setup, GE has got you covered. Today, the company officially launched the latest product in their connected home lineup: a HomeKit-compatibile air conditioner. Called the GE® ENERGY STAR® 115 Volt Electronic Room Air Conditioner, the appliance can be effortlessly installed in a window of your choice, allowing you to conveniently manage the temperature of your home from your mobile device.

The testing regime itself is another obstacle to real improvement. Yes, stoves are getting better, and by 2022 those sold in Europe will have to meet Ecodesign standards that set limits on how much smoke they can produce. 

Engineers estimated savings from improvements to the heating plant — which included insulating the pipes and boiler as well as adding TRVs throughout the 126 units — at more than $36,000 a year. The state authority provided $63,000 for those and other upgrades, which helped defray the costs. And there is a payoff in comfort. “Having the TRVs where we can adjust our radiators, it’s really great,” said Jane Maisel, a co-op board member and teacher. Over the years, Ms. Maisel and some of her neighbors had removed radiators to deal with their overheated apartments. “Now some people, like me, will probably have to put some back in,” she said.

If you’ve ever lived in a building with manually controlled central heating, you’ll probably understand [Martin]’s motivation for this hack. These heating systems often have old fashioned valves to control the radiator. No Nest support, no thermostat, just a knob you turn.

Cars and trucks get more attention but nationally, domestic wood burning is the largest single source of PM2.5. According to one analysis of government data, it produces more than twice as much as all road traffic. While concerns about diesel vehicles focus largely on the nitrogen dioxide they produce, the evidence tying particulates to death and disease is even more powerful.

Thermostat compatibility: Compatible with most conventional single-stage thermostats. Added features and functions are available by using the Hx3 Wi-Fi four-wire communicating thermostat, which, with the proper app, supports remote access for the consumer and contractor for both monitoring and control.

Serviceability features: Rotatable inducer for venting out top or side. Every unit is one- or two-pipe vent compatible. Built-in condensate trap removed from the blower compartment simplifies installation. Toolless entry with quarter-turn knobs. Flexible installation will work with conventional thermostats or the Hx3 Wi-Fi communicating thermostat when a limited number of thermostat wires are available.

The competing stoves will feature WIFI connectivity, sensors and micro-processors that eliminate the need to manually adjust air flow and help ensure a much cleaner and efficient combustion. Other competing wood stoves and boilers will generate enough electricity to power everything from a cell phone to part of a home or electric vehicle. One European pellet boiler at the Design Challenge will be charging a Tesla.

New accessories: HomeKit-enabled sprinklers and faucets have been added to the HomeKit framework. While you can’t currently purchase any HomeKit-enabled faucets or sprinklers, it’s likely there will be products available when iOS 11 ships this fall.
