We had the Lyric T6R fitted, which is the same as the standard T6 but comes with a freestanding, wireless thermostat which you can take around the home rather than the hard-wired, mounted solution.
That’s because it detects when you’ve re-entered the geofence, through your phone’s location, and goes back to your at-home settings. And as you can expand or reduce the circular zone, you can time it to your preference.
Unlike other TRVs, the Wiser Radiator Thermostats don’t have a screen or advanced controls. Instead, you just twiddle the spring-loaded top towards the ‘+’ position to give you a 2˚C boost on the current temperature for one hour. The ‘–’ position lowers the temperature by 2˚C for an hour. It sounds basic, but the clever controls mean that a touch of the dial makes a cold-feeling room warmer, or a hot-feeling room cooler.
Additional features: This represents a model expansion to better match Southern cooling requirements, which include better flush mount coil match ups, lower heating to cooling ratios, and improved high static airflows.
They make a gentle mechanical whirring sound when a new stage of a heating schedule kicks in, which is particularly comforting when you’re tucked up in bed fearing the cold. The LED display also lights up when a new stage begins, but you can stop this happening in the app settings if you feel you don’t need it.
The Nest comes in a range of attractive colours, and it’s easy to use too: the whole outer casing acts as a dial, giving you highly tactile control over temperature, schedules and other features. You can alternatively configure everything from the companion smartphone app – but you shouldn’t have to do much of this, as the Nest is designed to learn your preferences and create a heating schedule automatically.

Note that turning your heating off isn’t essential while installing the system, but turning it down is advisable if you don’t want to scald your fingers on the hot pipes.
A multi-room system gives you much finer control: you can set a specific temperature target for each room, and even create different heating schedules for different parts of your house. There’s more to configure, though, and each radiator you want to control will need to be fitted with a smart TRV – which can easily double the price of the whole system.
