And why not? Anyone who has ever watched the gently dancing flames will know that real fires are relaxing and reassuring, a nostalgic link to an age when life was simpler.

Schedules can be set room by room, with each one having its own heating settings. That’s great, as you can make your housework the way you want it to – say, having the bathroom and bedroom warm up first thing in the morning, with the lounge not set to warm up until you get home in the evening. This level of control provides greater fuel bill savings than using a single thermostat by itself would. Hot water can be similarly scheduled if you have the two- or three-channel system.

Most smart thermostat systems integrate with some sort of voice-control system. This means you can (for example) temporarily dial up the warmth in a specific room without having to rummage around for your phone, or physically go and fiddle with the thermostat itself. Check that your chosen voice system is supported, though: most work with Amazon Alexa, but not all models work with Google Home or Siri.
