One of the peskiest hurdles in home automation is replacing your current home setup and re-learning habits. You go from flipping switches on walls to commanding virtual assistants with your voice or poking at a phone with your finger. And while you eventually do pick up the new habits, it can be a struggle instructing guests on how to control the lighting, heating and cooling, fans, blinds, etc. in your home.

Elgato’s new Eve Light Switch solves this problem by combining the familiarity of a light switch with the convenience and — I’ll admit it — coolness of home automation.

The truth, though, is less pleasant than those hygge fantasies. Wood smoke is thick with the tiny particulates, known as PM2.5, that are linked to heart attacks, strokes, cancer, dementia and various other ailments. What’s more, the claims about a climate benefit from wood use are questionable.

The Cozy’s victory is understandable. Having just launched a new skill for Amazon Alexa, Iris has now also added compatibility for Google Home. Currently Iris users can control lighting using Google Home, although the company has confirmed that more control options will be coming in the future.

Continuing on to Jefferson, we pass in front of the Post Office. It’s a big, handsome Post Office. It was built in the 1930s, in a style commonly associated with the Works Progress Administration. The WPA was a Federal employment program set up by President Roosevelt after he took office in 1933, which put up government buildings all across the county. But if we look at the cornerstone, we see that it was built in 1931, when President Herbert Hoover – supposedly the “do-nothing” villain of the Great Depression – was in office. 

As well as the default schedule, Evohome has four programmable quick actions: Economy reduces zone temperatures by 3˚C; Away sets every zone to a pre-set temperature, which is handy if you go on holiday; Day off changes the schedule to match the weekend, so you’re warm if you’re home during the week; and there’s a Custom mode, which lets you set your own special schedule. We use Custom mode as a guest mode, turning up the heat in the spare bedroom when we have people to stay.

The system connects directly with all standard plumbing fittings creating a sleek, level partition between dry and wet areas for perfect integration between indoor and outdoor areas.
