Moreover, any climate gain is premised on wood replacing a fossil fuel such as gas – a swap that, in the case of stoves or fireplaces, often isn’t the case.

But then his twin brother, Jeremy, moved to New York to dance in “Come Fly Away” on Broadway. His brother complained “incessantly,” Mr. Cox said, that “it was boiling, or freezing, many times both over the course of a night.” It drove Marshall Cox to invent the Cozy, a radiator cover that can contain the warmth in an overheated room and shift it to an underheated room. The Cozy, which Mr. Cox has described as a “glorified oven mitt” and which is being sold on a limited basis, went on to win a $220,000 M.I.T. Clean Energy Prize in 2012.
At the turn of the 20th century, radiators were mostly plain grey metal. Many of these were fancy with gorgeous Victorian-style decorations. Radiator manufacturers did this because central heating was new back then and they wanted to make the radiators part of the room’s decor. That worked out well and the business grew.

Srinagar: Modern heating gadgets are slowly replacing the traditional heating devices in Kashmir, including the Kashmiri hamam- a special room with a hollow floor paved with stone slabs which are heated by firewood underneath. Nowadays many people are opting to build an electric hamam in place of traditional hamam. An electric hamam involves laying of specific wires in the floor bed, which heat up the room using electricity. Showkat Ahmad, a resident of Bemina in Srinagar said that last year when he was constructing his house, he had plans to build a traditional hamam in it, but then heard about electric hamam. “I starting search for it (electric hamam) and contacted the dealer. After getting all details I decided to go for electric hamam rather than tradition one, as I have to only switch it on. There is no need of wood and no pollution,” Showkat said. The traditional hamam uses fire wood to heat up the floor. Compared to the electric option, firing up a traditional hamam is quite a hassle. The fireplace for a hamam is accessible from outside the house, through which firewood is fed and burnt to heat up the floor bed. The frequent power curtailment schedules in winter are not dampening the spirit of electric hamam users, as Showkat said, the hamam remain warm even for upto two hours after power cut. “We did not suffer nor we thought we have taken any wrong decision as when power goes off it still keeps the room warm for at least two hours,” Showkat said. Shugufta, owner of Ecotech Engineers, which deals with electric hamams, said the “new technology” is in good demand. “It warms room to at least 40 degree, the demand is very high, and this is cheaper than traditional hamam. For electric hamam people don’t have to wake up early, a customer only has to switch it on. Even in power cuts it keep room warm for at least two hours,” Shaista said. She added that apart from residential houses, they have also installed electric hamams in shrines which include the Dargah Hazartabal and Chari- Shareef. People can also opt for partial laying, like covering the sitting area only, thus cutting down on installation and energy cost. Tanveer Ahmad, a resident of Eidgah, said he opted for electric hamam covering the sitting space only. “I always wanted to construct tradition hamam but that is very costly and then I heard about electric hamam. I decided to do only the sitting portion and it works very good,” Tanveer said. Nowadays, radiators are also used for room heating in Kashmir, in which hot water or air is circulated. In some cases, a mesh is buried under floors which is heated through circulating hot water. “The water is heated in boilers which can be run on electricity, diesel, kerosene or even wood briquettes. The system is self-contained and just a push of a switch inside the house can start it running. Everything would be heated nicely in winter on electric power. In the present scenario of acute shortage of power, the ideal thing is to have heating on diesel oil which is available,” Shaista said.
Woodburning stoves also have to be certified by the Environmental Protection Agency (in the US anyway) and need to have a higher efficiency rating. A modern wood stove can have an efficiency rating upwards of 80 percent. This means it produces four times more heat from a single log than older stoves.
